Visitor Policies

We cordially invite all local residents and visitors alike to experience Richmond’s History & Culture. For the protection and safety of visitors and staff, as well as to preserve the Richmond Museum collections and facilities, the following policies apply when visiting.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Face masks are optional indoors but encouraged. No proof of vaccination is required upon entry.

To learn more about COVID-19 and keeping each other safe during visitation hours, please review the CDC guidelines.

Housekeeping Policies

Visitors may utilize lockers to keep bags and other items stowed away for the duration of their visit.

Please do not touch objects in the exhibit. Skin can contain oil, dirt build-up or other such contaminants that can damage exhibits. Please keep a distance of about two feet from the exhibits at all times. Note that interactive displays that involve the use of touch are allowed to be handled by visitors.

Children may not be carried on the shoulders of another person or in a backpack child carrier. Unattended children under 12 years of age are not permitted in the galleries. Please keep your children with you at all times. Small or regular strollers are permitted on the premises.

You are welcome to check backpacks, free of charge. Otherwise, please wear them on one shoulder.

Accessibility

The museum is wheelchair-accessible. If further accommodations are needed, please let museum staff know!

Cellular Phones

Talking on cellular phones is not permitted in the museum so as to not disrupt other visitors. However, important phone calls may be conducted in the courtyard right outside the entrance.

Food and Drink

  • You are welcome to leave water bottles in the lockers, free of charge. Otherwise please keep them closed so as to prevent any potential spillage. Glass containers are prohibited.
  • Please do not bring consumable items with you throughout the exhibitions. Enjoy your snacks in the Richmond Museum courtyard, but please don’t bring in any outside food.
  • Alcohol is prohibited to bring onto the premises.

Photography and Video

Non-flash personal photography and video filming is permitted in the Richmond Museum unless otherwise prohibited for specific exhibitions. Tripods, selfie sticks, and other bulky or lengthy equipment are not allowed for use within the building. Please be aware of surroundings when taking photos or videos, as the museum space is dense. Tripods are allowed outside in the courtyard, with the exception of permission needed during a heavily attended gathering outside.

Drones are not allowed on Richmond Museum property.

Sketching

Sketching is allowed within the museum for personal use and only to be done with a pencil or pen. Charcoal, paint, markers, and other materials that can cause a mess are prohibited.

If it is used for commercial purposes or expected to limit navigability throughout the exhibit, please give prior notice to staff for permission.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited within the Richmond Museum building as well as in its outdoor areas.
