Professor Cherny will present the life and work of Victor Arnautoff, with special attention to the mural he created for the Richmond Post Office in 1941. Photos will be presented of his major public murals and a few of his other works. Learn how the Richmond mural reflects and differs from some of the themes he developed in earlier works.

Robert W. Cherny is professor emeritus of history at San Francisco State University, where he taught for 41 years. He received his PhD from Columbia University. In his teaching and writing, he has specialized in US history since the Civil War and the history of California and the West. He is author or co-author of more than forty published essays and eight books, most recently Victor Arnautoff and the Politics of Art in 2017. His biography of Harry Bridges is with his publisher and is likely to appear next year.
