The restoration of the SS Red Oak Victory is a work in progress and will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. However, the volunteers have made a great strides in restoring the ship in the time since it was conveyed to the Richmond Museum Association. The ship is in much better shape now then it was when it first came back to Richmond in the late 1990s. Forty years in the ghost fleet took a toll on this old girl! Before and after photos below demonstrate how far the ship has come to being fully restored.
In addition to cosmetic restoration, the volunteers are also working to ‘light off’ the engine, a process that will light the boilers, for the first time since 1968.
