Roberts\, and the legacy left behind by the Tuskegee Airmen! \nEVENT AT CAPACITY – JOIN US VIRTUALLY!\nJoin the Richmond Museum Association and The Walking Ghosts of Black History in celebrating the profound legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. We are honored to host sisters Leigh Roberts and Lanelle Roberts Brent\, daughters of Col. George S. “Spanky” Roberts—the first African American aviation commander of the Tuskegee Airmen’s 99th Fighter Squadron—and their mother\, Edith Roberts\, founder of the Tuskegee Airmen Living History Team. \nContinuing their parents’ mission\, Leigh and Lanelle are dedicated to sharing the untold stories of the Tuskegee Airmen—accounts that go beyond the history books. Don’t miss this special presentation as they offer insights into their father’s pioneering role and the profound impact of the Tuskegee Airmen on American military history. \nThe Tuskegee Airmen was born in 1941 to much internal and external opposition from proponents of segregation and Jim Crow law in the government. With the support of organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)\, black press outlets\, and civil rights figures such as Asa Philip Randolph\, the military had no choice but to authorize the formation and deployment of the 99th Fighter Squadron. The conception of this organization began when Leon Watkins was cast as the flag bearer for the national colors with the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in the motion picture “GLORY”. Recognizing Watkins’ true commitment to his ideas and vision\, the film producer\, Freddie Fields\, contributed 20 Civil War uniforms used in the movie to help start THE WALKING GHOSTS OF BLACK HISTORY organization (TWGOBH). \nSince then both founders\, Leon Watkins and Larry Thompson have participated in numerous community events and school lectures.  Participation has included; winning First place in the City of Oakland’s Veteran’s Day parade in 1991 for authenticity\, presentation of a commemorative wreath at the ceremony for the 9th and 10th Cavalry / 24th and 25th Infantry in Honor of National Buffalo Soldiers Day in the City of San Francisco\, July 1992\,  the Home Front Festival / Rosie The Riveter Historic Society – Richmond\, CA.\, Oct 2012 and the 1st annual commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Burning of Darien Festival-Darien\,Ga. June 2013 – just to name a few. \n           Their objectives are to work with historians and community leaders to present to the public documentaries and film showcases about African American  involvement in the US military. This will create a visual and multimedia platform for educational programs along with a living history archive and reenactments held yearly. They strive to have Veterans play an active role in TWGOBH. \nAbout The Tuskegee Airmen Heritage Chapter of Greater Sacramento\nThe Tuskegee Airmen Heritage Chapter is a non-discriminatory\, non-profit corporation whose purpose is to educate the public about the Tuskegee Airmen by providing facts\, statistics\, and personal historical perspectives on their true history and legacy through public outreach including: History Presentations\, their Youth Legacy Program\, and Scholarships. \nThis chapter is part of a larger\, national organization: \nTuskegee Airmen\, Inc. (TAI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit\, incorporated in 1975 by its namesake members\, the\nTuskegee Airmen of World War II. More than 16\,000 African American service men and women participated in\nthe training of aircrew members from 1941 to 1949. The mission of TAI is to preserve the legacy of the original\nTuskegee Airmen and to inspire the next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals by exposing them to\nscience\, technology\, engineering and mathematics.

It originated from a salon for African American artists known as Colors of Black that was organized in 1989 by artist and professor Marie Johnson Calloway. \nIn 1996 artists Jan Hart-Schuyers and Rae Louise Hayward established the exhibition The Art of Living Black at Richmond Art Center. Many of the artists from Colors of Black participated in the inaugural exhibition\, which presented the work of emerging and established African American artists. The artists gained introductions to new audiences\, and access to build a creative community of artists and art lovers. \nOver the next twenty-five years the exhibition ensured the increased visibility for African American artists in the Bay Area that Hart-Schuyers and Hayward conceptualized.  After the loss of both founders\, their organizing efforts were carried on for many years by artists\, family members\, and RAC. \nThe next stage of the events development happened in 2018\, when a Steering Committee comprised of participating artists\, presented the exhibition. In 2019\, the Committee became aware of the necessity to incorporate a broader vision of the African Diaspora and consequently renamed the organization Art Of The African Diaspora. \nIn its 28th year\, Art of the African Diaspora continues to express and celebrate the creative achievements of artists of African descent. DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Fleet Week honors both the current U.S. Navy and our Naval heritage. Join us on board the World War II veteran ship USS Red Oak Victory on Sunday\, October 13 for a Pancake Breakfast \, live music\, and Navy exhibits to mark San Francisco Fleet Week 2024. \n[TICKETS HERE] \nWhat could be better for Fleet Week than to enjoy a breakfast cooked in and served from a real World War II ship’s galley? We’ll be celebrating our Navy and our history while enjoying a great breakfast and great views on the decks of the Red Oak Victory. Live music will be provided all morning by the Crescent Katz who describe their music as seriously hot jazz!  We’ll also have a large model of a World War II convoy at sea. And\, as a special bonus\, the Blue Angels usually fly over the ship on their way into the Fleet Week Airshow over San Francisco Bay. (For more information about San Francisco Fleet Week 2024\, click here.) \nOur radio room will also be in operation so you can send a radiogram to anyone in the world. Imagine you are on a world cruise in the 1930s and have the crew send your message via our original\, Morse code-only ship’s radio. Just fill out the radiogram form including the recipient’s email or phone number and we’ll take care of the rest at no charge! \nYour breakfast is only $15 for adults and $5 for children 8 and under. Breakfast service begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 12:30 PM. (We serve until 1:00 PM but no new admissions will be taken after 12:30.) All tickets include a self-guided tour booklet and\, as an added bonus\, a limited number of same-day docent-guided tours of the ship are available at a discounted rate. After breakfast\, enjoy a tour of the ship or just sit\, chat with new friends\, and enjoy beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay. DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets here! \nProfessor Cherny will present the life and work of Victor Arnautoff\, with special attention to the mural he created for the Richmond Post Office in 1941. Photos will be presented of his major public murals and a few of his other works. Learn how the Richmond mural reflects and differs from some of the themes he developed in earlier works. \nRobert W. Cherny is professor emeritus of history at San Francisco State University\, where he taught for 41 years. He received his PhD from Columbia University. In his teaching and writing\, he has specialized in US history since the Civil War and the history of California and the West. He is author or co-author of more than forty published essays and eight books\, most recently Victor Arnautoff and the Politics of Art in 2017. His biography of Harry Bridges is with his publisher and is likely to appear next year.
